Spokane County Explorer Search & Rescue was formed in 1970. This unit was one of the first search & rescue teams to be created within the Pacific NW region. The team operates under the jurisdiction of the Spokane County Sheriff Department in conjunction with the Washington Explorer Search & Rescue Association (WESAR) and the Boy Scouts of America.

ESAR is a program for young adults from fourteen to twenty years of age, with adult advisor welcome to participate. The team  specializes in the search of missing persons within urban and wilderness environments, recovery of the injured, evidence search operations, and provides mutual aid in disaster related emergences.
